International Tramp on Stewart Island

Arnika Hazelwood —

A group of international students enjoyed their 3-day tramp on Stewart Island in March, with Dr Murray Thompson, Matua Tip Winiata and ex-student and outdoor adventurer, Rebecca Vella-King.

They enjoyed great weather, awe-inspiring views and wonderful company.
The group drove to Invercargill and flew to Stewart Island. They then tramped for 3 hours to the Port William Hut, went fishing and Tip showed them how to get paua. On Sunday they trekked for 6 hours to the North Arm Hut, and went swimming and gathered cockles and mussels so dinner began with a seafood chowder. Monday, saw them walk 3 hours out to Halfmoon Bay, where they enjoyed fish and chips for lunch, before flying back to Invercargill and driving home. Thanks to Dr Thompson, Matua Tip and Rebecca for organising the event. Students are looking forward to their next adventure.
