World Refugee Day Event
On the 24th June, as part of activities surrounding World Refugee Day, the LPHS Amnesty International Group hosted an evening of discussion and education about the global refugee crisis.
Attendees heard journalist Steve Addison speak
about his experiences visiting Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan and his work in
publicising the plight of refugees worldwide.
We also screened the documentary ‘Mary Meets Mohammad’ which focuses on
the response from the Tasmanian community to refugees arriving in
Australia. It tells the moving story of
how the views of elderly women in a local knitting group were drastically
altered when they make personal contact with refugee men held in a nearby
detention centre.
Members of the LPHS Amnesty Group thoroughly enjoyed the event and are looking forward to taking further action on refugees and asylums seekers.
