Student Sport Council

Erica Stedman, Kate Denys (Year 11) and Ms Vella. —

The Logan Park Student Sport Council has had a very successful year.

The Council is made up of four Sports Prefects, Tyler Stenton-Martin, George Vella-King, Runa Falanitule and Maddie Bowen, and Chris Gillett, Oliver Eden-Mann, Kate Denys, Erica Stedmann, Sean Hall, Lily Menzies and Solomon Liesbeth and our Sports Coordinator, Ms Vella. The Student Sports Council meets fortnightly to discuss upcoming inter-house, sporting events and other sporting related affairs happening in the school. Our Sports Prefects also take turns at representing us on the School Sports Council. Our role is to support the Sports Department and to motivate students to participate in Sporting events run both by the school and outside providers.

We are very proud that our participation rate for Sport has risen from 56% in 2013 to 62% this year.

The following are some events we have been involved in organising or running ourselves

The first Inter-house competition of the year was Athletics Day. We were lucky enough to have good weather, and lots of House spirit to make it a really enjoyable day. At the end of the day Omimi House were the first winners of the year to take out the House Challenge Cup.

Next we had the dodgeball inter-house competition. Run over two weeks, this turned out to be a very popular event among students with many taking part. At first it was thought that Aoraki would win, since they had beaten every House they had played that week. But in the final against Omimi, Omimi just managed to take the House Challenge Cup again.

In Term 2 we supported Mr Bayne in running the Inter-House Cross Country competition. This was a successful event with our top runners going through to the Otago cross country and doing well. Toroa took the House Challenge Cup from Omimi.

During winter we also ran lunchtime competitions. These included table tennis, five aside football and three-on-three basketball. These were very popular and well attended. Table tennis ran three lunchtimes a week.

In Term 4 we again supported Mr Bayne in running the Interhouse Indoor Rowing competition. Our role was to each support our House Sports Prefects to run around the school getting students to sign up for teams. Aoraki motivated their team members to practice before the big event and it paid off on the day as the won this event.

Some of us in the Student Sports council have attended talks by well known sporting personas. These included Jodi Brown, player in the Silver Ferns and Captain of the Southern Steel and Sir Gordon Tietjens, the coach of the New Zealand All Black sevens team. Both of these talks have been inspiring and motivating. Our Sports Prefects and Yr 12 members also attended Sports Leadership training seminars run by Otago Secondary School Sports Assn.

One highlight for us was attending the Coaching course that our Sports Department organised through Sport Otago for Term 1. Many of us went on to coach sports teams and really enjoyed it.

We are looking forward to another great year next year.
