Languages Department overview

Barbra Fitzsimons —

2015 has been a happy and successful year in our department with teachers enjoying their classes and students reporting good achievement in learning environments.

We were sad to see Ms Christine Beck retire in the middle of the year, but she left her classes and programmes in the best possible order for the handover to our new enthusiastic Latin teacher, Ms Maeve Lonie. Kua mutu kua timata.

The hosting of the Nga Manu Korēro Competition was a highlight of the year and thanks to the great team effort of Matua Tip and the reo whanau.

Well done to Ava Straw for her Year 12 National Alliance Française speaking completion win and her prize of a trip to New Caledonia coming up soon.

We have become part of the ALLiS (Asian Language Learning in Schools programme) contract which means that we will have students studying Japanese and Korean in our school next year as well as Chinese, which has been established over the last four years. We are pleased to have Dr Lin Zeng and Ms Sue Kim on our teaching staff with both physical classes in the school and Video conference classes with NetNZ planned for next year.

Exciting times for students and teachers lie ahead! Read on as we celebrate our successes in the other articles!
