Year 12 PE Snowboarding Trip 2015

Kelly Wilkinson —

It was a bright and early 7am start for Logan Park's Year 12 Physical Education class with 40 students and 4 staff embarking on an outstanding trip to Ohau ski field.

Wednesday began with an early morning start, a few laughs, a long drive and a beautiful Mr Bane lecture on safety and behaviour. A stop at Oamaru to feed the masses was our only delay before we arrived at our accommodation. Once we arrived, students were assigned rooms and got changed to head up the mountain.

The first day of snowboarding saw the boys take to it like ducks to water and most were soon flying down the hill. Girls were on the whole still figuring out how to do up their own boards and stand up, which thankfully was achieved by most by the end of the day.

On Thursday, we were up the mountain bright and early and spent all day up there in the sunshine. Some of the more able students were sent off after their lesson to explore the harder slopes. There were no major incidents other than Felix being run off the slope over an edge, due to a stray skier not quite being in control of themselves. No harm done. Students were really getting the hang of things and starting to show some great skills. Highlights on both nights were the spa pools, which were extremely popular, packed with over 10 students each, and the ping pong table.

Friday was another early morning with glorious sunshine. We had a short lesson and then it was assessment time, with most gaining Achieved or higher. It was lovely to see Joe helping with instructing other students once lessons finished. Florence went down along with Jonty and Chelsea on the injury front, thankfully nothing too serious, and a bit of shuffling of vans had us all returned safely.

The trip to Ohau was a lot of fun plus two Achievement standards completed for most. A very unforgettable experience that students will remember for the rest of their lives.
