March Sports Round up

The Otago Athletics Champs held in March were a highlight with strong performances from our team.

Standouts include:

Nico Alvarez Ray-Virag continuing to dominate in middle distance running by winning the 3000, 1500 and 800 metre U16 races. Brothers Jake and Zack Hibbert winning their respective Hammer sections with Jake setting an Otago record in the U14. April McMillan Perkins winning the senior Girls Javelin. Josiah Hola winning both the 100 metres and the shot put in the senior para non-competitive section.

Other team members gained top 3 impressive results featured below:

Boys U16 Javelin Throw- John Barham- 3rd place with 28.20m 

Boys U14 Hammer Throw- Jake Hibbert- 1st place and Otago Record with 29.51m

Boys Snr Hammer Throw- Zack Hibbert- 1st place with 37.63

Boys Snr 400m- Nicholas James-Pirie- 2nd place with 53.96

Nicolas Alvarez Rey-Virag 800m U16- 1st with 2:03.88 1500m U16- 1st with 4:21.73 3000m U16- 1st with 9:40.66 

Boys Snr 1500m run- George Fisher- 3rd Place with 4:38.30

Girls U15 80m Hurdles- Lily Abbott- 2nd place with 16.05 secs

Josiah Hola- 100m Sprint Non Class PARA SNR II NC - 1st place with 14.97 Shot Put Non Class PARA SNR II NC- 1st Place with 6.52m 

Girls Snr Javelin Throw- April McMillan Perkins- 1st place with 21.02m

In the Otago school triathalon champs in Wanaka in February we had 5 teams competing and our mixed U16 team of Cora Chapman, Keiran Black and Nico Alvarez Rey-Virag won with Eva Woodhouse, Liam Black and George Fisher 2nd in the U19 event and Tom Barson, Leon Wilson-Brown and Nikau Kaan 3rd in the U16 boys.

Leilani Baeumer won the U19 short and long course canoe events at the Southern Regional Surf Life Saving Champs in Christchurch in February.

Grace Jones competed in the Beach Handball Nationals with her Otago women’s team coming second to Wellington in the finals.

Our Students Sports Council is up and running led by Sports Heads Harry Major and Leilani Baeumer. Together with their sports prefects they have already implemented lunchtime events as well as some girls zone sessions in the gym.
