Michelle Summerfield —

The library continues to be a popular place right in the center of our school. Before school between fifty and seventy students await the bell in the library, making use of the computers, the couches and the warmth.

This year has seen some changes with Jenny Millar retiring at the end of term 1 after many, many years of faithful service at LPHS as librarian. In term 2 Michelle Summerfield started as the new librarian, having come from a teaching and public librarian background. She has been ably assisted by student librarians and is especially grateful for the hard work of Emma Lloyd, the senior student librarian.

There have also been some changes in the layout of the library and a generous loan of photography portfolios from the art department has brightened up the library space.

In 2017 the library has run a number of events. We trialled ‘Blind Date with a Book’ with some year 10’s and they enjoyed the challenge of choosing and reading a book without first seeing the cover.
Year 9 classes were invited into the ‘library cafe’ to indulge in a book tasting session. In this session a number of books were sampled by each student and they appreciated the ambiance of gingham tablecloths and teachers in aprons!

In term 4 we have started a book club which meets after school on Tuesdays. We chat about books, view newly acquired books, plan library displays/events and eat cake!

During the first eight weeks of Term 3, all Year 9 classes took part in a reading challenge. A long-standing annual event, run as a part of the library programme, the reading challenge required students to set reading goals and work hard to achieve them.
