October Sports Round Up

Arnika Hazelwood —

Congratulations to our talented Sports Co-ordinator, Francine Vella who has won a School Study Award to visit Victoria Australia in November.

Francine received a 2016 Peter Sharp NZSSSC School Study Award to visit secondary schools in Australia with successful, innovative approaches to sport. The award recognises Francine's effort, energy and enthusiasm for all things Sport at Logan Park. She has worked effectively with the PE/Health Dept and the Student Sports Council to introduce a number of initiatives and continue to encourage both competition and inclusive participation.

Students have returned from their 10 day Kingaroy tour of Brisbane and the Gold Coast where they played volleyball, basketball and touch, as well as visiting Theme Parks. Check out their Haka in the photo gallery below. Thanks to Francine, Murray Thompson, Mal Thompson and James Govan for their support with the trip.

In Senior Futsal, Term 3 results saw us winning the Boys Division 2 and coming second in Boys Division 1. We had 4 boys teams and 2 girls teams competing. In Football Ben Dubyk's 16th Grade Otago team won the South Island Tournament during the September holidays in Timaru. Ben, who plays Goalie, was named Most Valuable Player of the South Island Tournament. He will travel to the New Zealand national age group tournament later this term.

Ben Deaker competed in the National Diving competition during the weekend of 22 October.  He was first on platform, second on 1 metre and 3rd on 3 metre.  His Otago team performed well with top 3 placings in most events.  Ben trains over 15 hours a week for diving and was the captain of the NZ school team when they toured Australia earlier this year.  Ben won the Best Sporting Performance Award for 2016 at our Senior Prizegiving.

Our Summer sports continue with cricket, tennis and futsal teams going well.

Junior teams are currently preparing for the Junior Sports Tournament in mid-November in volleyball, cricket, dodgeball, volleyball and waterpolo.

Danielle Frost, our Acting Head of PE/Health organised a volleyball skills session in November for secondary students with Des Kerekere which was well attended and appreciated.

Our most recent sports participation rate from the national sports census is 64% which is pleasing.

In sailing, Anna Walrond is one to watch.  She sails at the Ravensbourne Boating Club and competed in the Bic South Island event placing second in the Silver Fleet.  She has also attended coaching clinics with Russell Coutts in Queenstown and earlier this year was selected to attend a coaching clinic in Auckland where the group stayed in Russell Coutts' house.  The students took part in the Winter O'pen Cup and Anna was in the top 10 in the Gold Fleet and sixth in the Under 16 category.  After Anna's impressive performance two sailors were selected to attend a regatta in Sydney, the Forward Sailing NSW O'pen Cup.  Both sailors are from Ravensbourne club, and as an ex-Ravensbourne sailor, Russell Coutts is paying for the 2 students flights and accommodation to support their sailing talents.
