Social Sciences Report
Logan Park continues to be very competitive in the subject quizzes held throughout the year. Teams were placed in all four major competitions: The Senior History Quiz, The Year 11 History Quiz, The University of Otago Senior History Quiz and the ODT Extra Current Events Quiz.
The annual Pedestrian Survey in June went smoothly on another fine Dunedin winters day. A change to the programme this year was a visit to the railway station and First Church to explore early Dunedin and its growth around the harbour. This was followed by an informative visit to the Dunedin Art Gallery to investigate issues around New Zealand Identity.
High numbers of students continue to choose humanities subjects in the senior school at a percentage way above the national average which continues to be very pleasing.
This year’s cultural tour to Vietnam with thirty students and staff in April was our fourth trip to this wonderful country and was seen as our best organised so far. Planning is well under way for next year’s trip in April to South Korea with twenty five attending.
The Environmental Studies trip to the Mackenzie country in Term One was once again a great highlight for the Year 11 class.
The visit to Dunedin in August, of Elisabeth Eckford, one of the Black Civil Rights Movements most famous protagonists saw sixty students from our Year 11 History classes attend her talk at Otago Girls High School. Several students asked very perceptive questions and there were comments on the bus back to school of how special it was to meet her in person.
Overall another great year for the department.
