BADMINTON

Paul Fielding —

2021 was another very good year for Logan Park badminton.

We continue to have a team in the premier division and this year they were the third best team in Dunedin. The team comprised Luke Brindson, Jack Ta, Min Le Lin and Jayden Jesudhass. These talented players held their own against some formidable opposing teams. Both Luke and Jake are top Otago representatives for their age groups.

Our second team won Division Two for the second year in a row, This team was comprised of mostly year 13 students, Oisin Benn, Marcus Davidson, George Hyink and George Fisher (Yr. 12). Their service to school badminton and their reliability has been most appreciated.

Our third junior team was also very competitive and comprised Bruno McMillan, Arlo Bickerstaff, Floriaan Keenan and Henry Riepl. Floriaan has won the junior badminton trophy for this year.

In July we decided to contest the South Island secondary school championship being played in Dunedin. Not all our top players were available due to age restrictions and music commitments so Oisin Benn and Marcus Davidson from our second team rose to the challenge to compete in such prestigious company. The team ended up 6th in the South Island after defeating Westland College in the play-off round.

At the Coed tournament in August we combined with the girl’s badminton players to place second behind Kavanagh which was an improvement on last year.

Next year we lose two players from the premier team and three from the second team. However we are confident of continuing to be one of the strongest Badminton schools in Dunedin.

Girls Badminton continues to be a popular sport. We had over 20 girls playing across the available divisions. Our Junior girls team of Maia Jack, Maria Hessell, Booke Thomson and Cordelia Fitzgerald played well winning their division. Our top girls team of Shima Jack, Maia Puricelli, April McMillan Perkins and Darcy Monteath joined our top boys team to compete in the Dunedin Co-ed Tournament in June. It was a highlight for the girls. Thank you to Heike Cebulla-Elder for overseeing girls badminton.
