Science and Evolution

Richard Pirie —

The combined Year 13 classes had a day focused on evolution and how it formed the Dunedin marine environment at the Marine Studies Centre at Portobello.

The day was more of an adventure than usual because the recent wild weather had washed out the road meaning that we had to travel from Port Chalmers by boat. The day was a great success, we all left having a deeper understanding of our local environment and the forces that shaped the invertebrate fauna.

In other Science news, in the recent Science Fair a number of Year 9 students distinguished themselves.  Islay Newnham-Scarth won the Aurora Prize for her project:  "Do Girls Prefer to Socialise with Girls who shop at Expensive Brands?"
George Hyink and Marcus Davidson won the NZ Baking Industry Prize for their investigation "Sour Flour Power."
