Year 11 Mt Cook Field Trip

Clair Caird and Rachel Molteno —

For three days at the end of April, our Year 11 Environmental Geography class went on a field trip to Mount Cook and the surrounding Waitaki basin.

We learnt about the formation of surface features and the hydro electric power scheme, which helped us complete two internals once we returned to school. We partook in many informative exciting activities on the trip, some of which were visiting Benmore Dam, visiting a salmon farm and attending a DOC presentation in Twizel, as well as another one at the Mt Cook Visitors Centre. We also ventured on multiple walks around the area.

All students loved the trip. As well as being educational, it was perfect for team building and friendship forming. Some highlights from the trip were visiting the Twizel High Country Salmon farm and feeding the fish, before feeding on the fish. We also really appreciated seeing features such as the Tasman Glacier in real life; it definitely furthered our understanding of the topic.

This trip was great and we would highly recommend it to students considering doing Environmental Geography in the years to come!
