Toroa House Report

Isabel Townsley —

Toroa house had a great year despite how strange of a year it was.

2020 was Ms Caulfield’s first year as Dean of Toroa, and she was amazing! From organizing an awesome House Day and encouraging everyone to get involved on Sports Day, to keeping tabs with Toroa members throughout the lock-down period, we could not have asked for a better House Dean following Ms Colbert.

Athletics day is a big part of house pride and team work as everyone in the house works together to earn points for the house. For Toroa, 2020 was not the year for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but a continuation of the 4th place position. However, although we didn’t place as a house, the team work and the unity of Toroa can only be described as amazing. The whole house worked together to show the other houses what really counts; having fun. We may not be the sportiest but we can come together and enjoy ourselves. Everyone dressed in the house colour of green and cheered for members of the house no matter what position they were in.

Every member of the Toroa house knows that the real pride and enjoyment comes from having fun with whatever activity is on.

For House Day, Toroa went to Long Beach. House Day was a great experience for all as it included swimming, group games, and a sausage sizzle. Every person in Toroa had the opportunity to join in the fun and be a part of the team building activities going on. As house leaders, the year 13s were in charge of getting everyone involved and making sure that everyone felt safe and were enjoying themselves. The day was very successful and everyone had heaps of fun enjoying the beach and the sun with beach volleyball, sandcastle building competitions, and group tug-of-war.

An event that the Toroa year 13s pulled together for the house after lock-down was a house Kahoot. Gathering together in the auditorium after such a stressful time as lock-down was an important part of pulling the house together and uniting again. The Kahoot was a mix of random trivia questions and questions that related to Toroa and the group teachers. Everyone was able to participate or simply watch but the event was very important to Toroa members as it reminded people of the fun and enjoyable activities that happen with our house.

There were many house competitions this year, including futsal, netball, and the O’MAthalon. The members of Toroa came and participated or supported our teams for all of these events and it was so amazing to see everyone come together to help out. The O’MAthalon house competition was a wonderful moment for Toroa. Toroa came first out of all four houses and proved that we sure know how to out-smart the competition. The team of four pulled together and won for the house which was fantastic to see. The win sent the message to everyone in Toroa that teamwork and enjoying yourself is the key to success.
