Cricket 2014

Paul Fielding —

Cricket this year has grown stronger with our team becoming older, taller and physically stronger.

After winning the 20/20 junior tournament in November 2013 our First X1 approached 2014 with the aim of winning at least half our games in Saturday competition. This goal has been achieved.

In the Term Three holidays the team competed strongly against stern opposition in the McCallum Cup tournament and at the time of writing this article they had won the first Saturday game in Term Four by a huge one hundred and sixty runs, with George Maclauren scoring a magnificent unbeaten century.

Our bowling is very strong with George Maclauren and Sean Hall providing express pace as the openers. Taine Clinch and Jaebyn Stevens accuracy and variation at medium pace also continues to surprise our opposition. And then our Indian imports Bipin Chauhan and Rahul Jat also pose threats with their contributions. Ibrahim Mohamed then bamboozles our opponents with his massive spin attack.

Our batting, while still quite brittle in the middle to lower order, is progressing well especially when we set a target. David Spencer continues to be our most accomplished batsman. Chasing middle to high scores has been a challenge throughout the season. At the time of writing we have won two out of four games against Kings and Otago Boys and were very competitive in the games against Kavanagh and South Otago.

With continued improvement the team aims to win the Open Schools competition in early Term 1 2015 and be competitive in the Gillette Cup towards the end of March.
