Year 12 Physical Education Ski/Snowboard Trip

James Govan —

The 2020 year 12 Physical Education ski/snowboard trip took place this year at the Cardrona Ski Field near Wanaka.

Students prepare for the trip by conducting a Risk Assessment Management Exercise (RAMS) form. During the trip they complete assessments on their performance of their Skiing/Snowboarding and a write up of their safety management strategies. This is a part of their internal assessment for Level 2 Physical Education.

This trip yet again proved to be fantastic with plenty of memorable moments. Students were adventurous and excited on the slopes, advancing their skills rapidly after only a short amount of time.

Day One provided plentiful snow, testing the students’ ability to navigate in low visibility conditions while learning. After some practice in the cold, our students were upset to hear that mention of the Wedge Turn or Pizza Slice was not actual food, but Ski terms they would get to know well. Our snowboarders had to be brave in learning to switch between a Toe Slide and Heal Slide, but eventually got the gist.

Day Two had some fantastic spells of clear and calm conditions which we took advantage of. Plenty of more difficult runs and some tricks were attempted during day two as the skill levels increased. Students really worked together to support each other and be patient in that new learning environment which was heartwarming to see.

Night times were fun, with students given the responsibility of cooking their own meals, which came out (surprisingly) well. Overall, our students thoroughly enjoyed their experience and cherished the opportunity to develop some self-sufficiency and resilience skills. This trip continues to be a major highlight of our year, every year.
