Year 11 Rock Climbing

James Govan —

As part of the Year 11 Physical Education programme at Logan Park, we take our students out to Long Beach to complete two assessments for credits.

The first one is based on how well they perform, and the second is a reflection on their safety practices.

The day is run by Dunedin Climbing Ltd which two amazing instructors come along for. We have had this trip as part of our programme for a number of years now, focusing on giving the students an opportunity to experience learning and skill development in the outdoors. This year both of our Year 11 classes got out to Long Beach on separate and stunning Dunedin day’s. The students were de briefed about safety and instructed to get their climbing shoes, helmets, and harnesses on and buddy check each other before climbing. They needed to know how to tie a figure 8 knot in the climbing rope and belay effectively before they arrived. With everything checked and in place, the students began to climb. We had students who ranged from terrified of heights to thriving with heights, but all of them made it up at least one of the climbs. There were different levels of climbing and each presented different challenges for hand holds and foot placements. Overall, the students all had a blast. They challenged themselves, developed resilience throughout the day, and all ended with smiles on their faces. It continues to be one of our most enjoyable Physical Education experiences of the year.
