May Sports Round Up

Arnika Hazelwood —

Some highlights in May include 16 year old Laura Graham's selection for the New Zealand U19 Handball development team.

Zack Hibbert (15) competed in Senior Otago Athletics this season and in the Men's U20 category he shared the honours of the W.J. (Bill) Dryden Memorial Trophy for the most points over the season in a throwing event (hammer, discus, shotput). Zack also broke Otago records earlier this season in his age group.

As well as the stunning Otago Cross Country results above, we've had some fantastic results in the OSSSA Cross Country series.

During the school holidays Zishen Fu represented Otago in a Southern Shield Table Tennis clash held in Invercargill. Otago was victorious in retaining the shield winning 57 games to 31. Zishen Fu played in the Under 18 boys team and had some stiff competition from the Southland boys. They narrowly lost 5-7 however Zishen played well and showed fantastic sportsmanship on and off the table.

In April, Head Boy of Sport, Ziggi Kaitai-Martin won the National Parkour Youth section for the second year in a row. He placed first in Style and second in Skill.

Our Student Sports Council have organised our school lunchtime Interhouse Dodgeball competition this term which means our gym has been packed at lunchtimes with some serious House rivalry and fun. Aoraki was the winner.

The Winter Sports season has started positively with increases in team numbers in Football, Hockey and Netball.

Students are enjoying the positive team cultures and we appreciate all the efforts from our wonderful coaches, managers and parents.

We also held our School Cross Country event and huge congratulations go to Nico Alvarez Rey-Virag who came First, Nick James-Pirie who was Second and Vivian Dalphin Third.
