LPHS Sailing Club

Caitlyn Kilner —

2015 has been a good year for sailing at Logan Park High School. The popularity of sailing at Logan Park is at its highest ever with numbers growing each term.

When we go out on the water sailing we go out in Sunbursts and occasionally Opti’s. In Term 1 the weather mainly treated us nicely and we managed to get out on the water most Mondays for a relaxing afternoon of sailing. Unfortunately, these nice “relaxing” afternoons could be interrupted by Mr. Parsons and Ms. Daly kindly circling us in the rescue boat cutting up the water around us. If it wasn’t for Mr. Parsons and Ms. Daly there wouldn’t be LPHS sailing, so a big thank you to them! However, they weren’t the only ones taking part in the dishing of banter; we students tended to do so too. This consisted of cutting each other off, water fights and encouraging other boats to capsize.

In Term 1 Fraser Braid and I competed in the South Island Secondary Schools Sunburst Regatta, where we were placed 1st in the non-spinnaker silver fleet. We spent 4 days competing in 18 races against 15 other crews. During the regatta Fraser kindly capsized us; so a big thank you to Fraser for “teaching me what to do in a capsize situation". On the last day of the regatta we had a fun day when the wind happened to forget to show up so we ended up having swimming races instead of going out to play in the boats.

Overall sailing for LPHS this year has been good. Here’s hoping next year will be the same. Thanks again to Mr. Parsons and Ms. Daly for another great year!
