Le concours oral de l’Alliance Française

Heike Cebulla-Elder —

Every year in September the annual speech competition takes place at Columba.

Whilst Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 take part in a serious competition, the Year 9 students this year participated in a quiz and also shared their wonderful French Matariki play “Maybe I am a sandfly after all” to a larger audience. We had a great time not only practising our French but also eating some French fare in a cafe run by university students. Our Year 9 quiz teams came first and second and won wonderful French books for our French library in room 11.

In the Year 10 speech competition the students had to prepare a French speech about something they are passionate about and both of our students were very successful with Ben Keppel coming first and Marco Farella a close second. Ruby-Louise Grant came third in the Year 11 category presenting and discussing her speech on her holidays.

Just as this is written, Bram Casey (Year 12) and Arthur Howard (Year 13) are preparing themselves for the national competition which takes place on Saturday, the 24th of September and if they win they will be traveling to New Caledonia in December.

Bon courage et les doigts croisés, Bram and Arthur!
