Learning and Support Class

A Place where Great Things Happen!

It is already the end of what has been another busy and productive year this year. Although lockdown was quite an interruption to the year, one of the highlights on our return was a beautiful new purpose built department to move into. It was really cosy over the winter and we love the new kitchen and different learning spaces. We even have our own garden shed! It looks like home now with all the walls decorated with our art work and Dave our Caretaker has planted Rhododendrons around the outside. Next year when the landscaping is complete we will start our vegetable garden and seating.

The year has been filled with many exciting activities and projects and the boys have thrived working on all aspects of their learning not only academically but socially, while focusing on maintaining a good sense of health and wellbeing.

All the boys were very proud of their achievement in their individualised, self-directed SPEC program with most students gaining at least two certificates.

Some other highlights from 2020 include the individual creations the boys completed such as the beautifully crafted wooden boxes, cabinets and bird feeders, native bird models, Japanese Lanterns and Spray Paint Planets. We did scare a few people with our life like hanging astronaut!

The boys really enjoyed learning about animal care with regular visits from lambs, ducklings and dogs.

Half the class went on the Year 10 camp this year to Tautuku. For many this was their first camp and they loved the huge variety of activities and challenges. Apparently the food was awesome too!

We have continued weekly work experience at Malcam REStore, Gardens New World Supermarket and Youth Grow Garden Centre. The class have learnt lots of new skills to impress future employers with how capable they are. They tell us that we do a great job and we really enjoy the variety of opportunities they give us.
