The arts at Logan Park thrived this year, with students of all levels achieving highly both in junior classes, NCEA standards, and extracurricular competition.

Highlights were Shem Scoles being awarded excellence at the Otago Secondary Schools art competition, successful exhibitions by the Curator’s Club, and Luke Major receiving Art Blues.

Year 13 students visited the top art show to see the best of last year’s Level 3 folios, helping them to set their goals high. They also travelled to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, accompanied by Year 9’s, to experience the Contemporary British Art show.

Photography students accelerated with leaps and bounds this year, helped along with new equipment, a student teacher, and the inclusion of a moving image standard for the first time.

Painting students have also been highly successful, an exciting event of this year being a visiting speaker Lucy Tyndall, who spoke to students, faculty, and guests about her work helping refugee children through art. This sparked a school-wide fundraiser to gather donations for the Rise Foundation to obtain art supplies.

Clive Humphries, drawing lecturer at Otago Art School, also spoke to Logan Park students on the importance of mapping as a planning device for projects, as well as an insight into his recent work.

Year 11 Art students were able to experiment in a variety of fields to develop their portfolios, including painting, photography, and printmaking.

Junior art students have completed a collaborative piece focusing on Maori gods, as well as working in sculpture, moving image, print making, and several other mediums.

2015 was finished off with the end of year art exhibition, with parents and friends of the senior art students coming in to view Level 1, 2, and 3 portfolios. The exhibition summed up the incredible work art students have completed this year, and hints at what they will continue to create coming into 2016.
