March Sports Round Up

Arnika Hazelwood —

Lots has been happening across all sporting codes, but special recent highlights include Basketball, Football and Sailing performances.

Top Otago basketballer, Jaren Roy (Year 12) has been invited as one of 20 top basketballers to attend the 2015 U17 National Selection Camp, in Auckland, in April and to work towards the FIBA Oceania Championships later this year.

The focus of the programme is on selecting the best team to compete at the U17 FIBA Oceania Champs and qualify for the 2016 U17 FIBA World Champs.

In January, Jaren attended the Junior Breakers (Under 17) Summer Camp in Auckland. He spent 4 days training in the Breakers headquarters/gym with the Breakers Development and Coaching staff. He was 1 of 3 selected to attend (out of 24 there) from the South Island, and the only Dunedin boy.

Jaren also attended the Mainland Eagles Academy Camp from 23-27 January in Christchurch.

Jaren is training with the Academy at the Edgar Centre several times a week, early in the morning, and he is working with a personal trainer twice a week on his fitness. He has also been selected for the Otago U17 Basketball team.

Emily Proctor, Year 9 has also been selected for the Otago U13 Basketball Development team.

And in Football, Joseph Araya, Year 10 has been selected to attend the National Football Talent Centre for a week in the April School holidays. This is the third year running Joseph has been selected and from the Talent Centre, Football NZ will select the U17 NZ squad.

On the sailing front, at the South Island Secondary Schools' Sunburst Sailing Regatta last week, Fraser Braid, Year 11 and Caitlyn Kilner, Year 12 competed all week and were placed first in the Silver Fleet section.

Our Senior A Girls Volleyball team attended the Satellite Schools Volleyball tournament in Christchurch in March and had a top 10 finish. Our lunchtime Dodgeball competition organised by the Student Sports council continues to be extremely popular with finals in the last week of term.     All of our Futsal teams will also finish their season at the end of the term.

A strong team competed in the Otago Southland Athletics Champs with Sophia Barriga third in Triple Jump and Molly Morley third in 400 metres and Long Jump. Tash Gosling was third in Senior Girls Shotput. These students as well as Jacob Gosling qualified for the South Island Secondary School Athletics Champs held in Nelson.
