Senior debating 2015

Grant McNaughton —

Logan Park has had a very auspicious year of debating with a number of achievements made by the teams and individuals in them, as well as great improvement being made to the quality of arguments being constructed.

Logan Park 1 (Jacobi Kohu-Morris, Grant McNaughton, Meran Campbell-Hood) started off the year by winning the Russell McVeagh inter-schools debating tournament, with Logan Park 2 also making it to the semi-finals. The semi-final moot was [This house believes that political parties should allow their members to elect the party leader, instead of MPs from their party], where Logan Park 1 was affirmative and beat Logan Park 2 (Oscar McGuire, Ben Clayton, Charlotte Dickie). The final moot was [This house believes that western media outlets should republish uncensored cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammed when reporting on threats or attacks against their artists], where Logan Park 1 was affirmative and beat Columba 1 in a 6-1 split.

Jacobi Kohu-Morris was selected for the regional team at Russell McVeagh, and later represented Otago at the national competition with Selena Ballantyne and Emily Williams from Columba. Ben Clayton, Oscar McGuire, and Grant McNaughton also were selected for the Otago regional development squad. Grant McNaughton won the most promising speaker award.

Logan Park 1 (now including Oscar La Dell) was less successful in the Dunedin Schools Debating competition, losing the semi-final to Columba with the moot: [Assuming it was possible, and could be implemented instantaneously, and without anyone noticing or remembering, this house would brainwash the entire earth to become progressive]. Meran Campbell-Hood was the 3rd best speaker in the Dunedin Schools Debating competition.

Logan Park has shown signs of improvement, and has had a very successful year with a number of achievements. Several promising year 10s are moving forward into senior debating in 2016, so we hope for an even better and brighter year to come.

In general, debating is in good heart at Logan Park. We would like to acknowledge the dedication of Meran Campbell-Hood as Debating Prefect this year, and also last year's team member Connor Seddon (now active in the Otago University Debating Society) as a stalwart, coming in weekly for most of the year to run coaching sessions.

Bring on next year!
