International Languages Week Term 3

Heike Cebulla-Elder —

What a fun half week it was!

Thanks to a grant by the Asia New Zealand Foundation, we were able to organise very entertaining and diverse activities for our students to find out more about all the languages and cultures we teach and have within our student body at school.

The QR Code Scavenger Hunt proved to be lots of fun and offered insights into the diversity of languages – did you know that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is translated into 370 languages and dialects?

Our Year 10 language classes enjoyed the challenges of a food fear factor and had the chance to try steamed silkworms, snails and super hot spicy Korean noodles – some suffered through the consequences!

The International Short Film festival will definitely go ahead again – with clear indications to where it is held! Apologies for that but check out the programme and have a look at these treasures from a variety of cultures over the break.

The Korean folk tale storytelling with the Gayageum (Korean traditional instrument) performance and the Cross over ensemble (Cultural journey with Korean and Aotearoa music - Pokarekare Ana) was really touching.

The Drum circle and Korean traditional instruments offered inspired interaction with students. After a short demonstration students were invited to give it a go and the students’ impromptu performances were great!

The Haiku competition attracted many wonderful haikus and these will be judged over the holidays, so watch the space for the announcement of the winners. All entries are on display now outside room 11.
