11 Environmental Geography Mt Cook field trip

Olivia Bradfield —

At the start of this year, 16 students taking level one environmental geography were packed into two vans with an enthusiastic Mr. Dixon and Ms. Daly and drove up to Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park.

This trip was a good experience for everyone who went on it, as we were given opportunities to look at the natural land features that we had been learning about for our internals, including the Tasman Valley and braided rivers. There were a variety of activities to take part in and people had to cook their own dinner in small groups, meaning that there was a large difference in everyone’s food quality; from two minute noodles to pesto pasta.

This trip was a good chance to get outside and experience geography in a practical setting that helped us achieve well on our internals later in the year. Many of the things we did were fun, with a geography influence, like a jet boat ride up to the Tasman Glacier. This trip was a highlight of the environmental geography year and I really enjoyed the experience to see a beautiful part of New Zealand.
