Athletics 2015

James Govan —

From the Javelin to the gruelling 3000m run, Logan Park had a good cohort of competitive and enthusiastic students competing in the Otago and Otago/Southland Athletics Championships this year.

Students were encouraged to participate in the school athletics and for those whose results were strong, were encouraged to enter the Otago Secondary School Athletics on the 28th of February this year. This meeting was the first stage in the quest to reach the South Island Athletics and finally the Nationals.

Athletes qualify for subsequent competitions by gaining better results than others in the competition and reaching the top 8-10 athletes in that event.

This year in the Otago Meet we had Tash Gosling come second in the senior girls shot-put with an outstanding throw of 9.92m. Sophia Barriga jumped 7.32m in the under 15 girls triple jump to gain herself 3rd position. Becky Barton leapt 4.05m in the girls under 15 long jump to take 4th spot. Zenith Rose-Wills ran a superb 58.81 seconds to take 5th position in the boys under 16 400m. Finally in the  top 5 positions we had Liam Gill heaving the shot 9.10m for the under 14 boys shot-put and Dylan Deans-Bennett throwing a commendable 22.81m in the under 16 javelin. Logan Park had a few other competitors who did not make the top 5 positions but nevertheless put in worthy efforts.

Moving on to the Otago/Southland Athletics Championships, in Invercargill, we had both Goslings take top spots. Jacob Gosling, who, finishing 6th in the Otago Meet with a throw of 10.99m in the Senior Shot-put, improved his position getting 5th with a throw of 11.71m. Tash Gosling took 3rd position, throwing a whopping 10.13m in the girls senior shot. Sophia Barriga maintained her consistency and took 3rd position for the under 15 girls triple jump, jumping 7.70m. Well done to all competitors during the course of the Athletics season. We hope to see you all training over the summer for another good year next year.
