Library Report

Jenny Millar NZLSC RLIANZA —

2016 – We are in our new library, YEAH!

The old Learning Centre, which was the original library when the school was built, has been transformed into a great space. I have used the ideas from the year 9 students last year regarding furniture and colours with our sofas being very popular. Our fiction shelves are mobile so we can clear the room for parent interviews and special events. Video conference facilities have moved to room 8 next door to the library and everything is working well.

Another new development is the Access-it library software so students can access our library catalogue via the school home page. It is found under Useful Links – OPAC. This is a great step forward and features a carousel display of new books, book lists for all NCEA levels and direct access to the EPIC data bases and NZ Geographic on-line.

New fiction includes a lot of award winning books from New Zealand, Australia, UK and America. There is a new collection of ‘Teen wellness’ books about mindfulness, and techniques for overcoming stress. Our collection to help LGBT students has been added to with both fiction and non-fiction titles now found in the book lists under ‘Rainbow support’.

In Term 3 our LPHS Reading Challenge resulted in 69 students reaching their goal.
