Peer Reading Programme

Morag MacTaggart —

Logan Park High School has run a successful Peer Reading Programme for many years now.

This year over fifty senior and junior students opted into the programme. The programme ran for two sessions, an eight week block in Term 1 and another six week block held in Term 3. Junior students were matched with Senior Buddies and they read together during Group time in the Library, three times a week.  All seniors received specific training in how to teach the basics of reading with many of our Senior Tutors having had peer reading support when they were in Year Nine.

The programme is designed for students to improve their reading confidence as well as their speed, fluency and comprehension. The parties at the end of each programme are always a highlight, and student evaluations from both juniors and seniors show it is appreciated as a worthwhile experience.

Thanks to Liz Cameron and Morag MacTaggart, as well as our Librarian Jenny Millar for all their support with the programme. And thanks to the Senior Buddies for their inspiration and passion for reading.
