LPHS Kapa Haka

Emma Samuels —

This year's experiences in LPHS Kapa Haka.

Coming from a small Kapa Haka at my ex-school I was excited to be a part of a tight knit group here at Logan Park. In term one it was all about getting to know our peers and starting strong relationship ties. Under the leadership of Marama Poutama, Runa Falanitule and Karen Penaia we had weekly practices, during Wednesday and Friday lunchtime plus Friday fourth period with the support of our senior management and teachers. A number of noho (a stay over) were scheduled to get us ready and prepared for Polyfest. During the year we also went to Nga Manu Korero regionals, a tribute dinner, several mihi-whakatau to support our senior management and many other such events. At the start of the year we had a large group, but as the year went on other activities and commitments saw our Roopu shrink to just a small number. But we still managed to be a hit at Polyfest 2013. On the night it was a total rush of emotions, the buzz of the crowd, everything seemed worthwhile, our hard work had paid off. Next year I can't wait for our Roopu to step up and take things to the next level. Thanks to all the teachers, senior management and our wonderful parents for the support. Just an extra thanks to all who made a contribution to our Kapa.
