Culture Club

Niamh Dillingham —

It has been a very eventful first year for Culture Club! We have been busy celebrating Logan Park’s diverse array of cultures, from Alaska to Lebanon to France, through weekly games, dances, and presentations.

A major highlight of this year was the Indigenous Peoples’ Hui, which we held in the whare and was open to everyone. With three days dedicated to Samoan, Yup’ik, and Māori cultures, there was plenty of time for singing, dancing, games, and teaching. The hui was filled with exhilarating moments, with tense matches of Samoan taulafoga, Alaskan stick-pull & seal hop, and poi rākau.

The annual International Food Festival in Term 3 was also majorly supported by Culture Club. Our frequent international shared lunches had us prepared to up the game for a larger audience. Members cooked everything from Japanese curry, Ghanaian jollof rice, Chilean empanadas, Alaskan aqutak, Indonesian tempeh, bakwan, bakpia, pia legong, and many more. We also prepared a hangi with goat, pork, kumara, cabbage, and stuffing.

So thank you to everybody who came and helped out with activities (especially Matua and the kapa haka group!). And thank you to everybody who participated in Culture Club this year, I hope you all enjoyed it!
