Environmental Group 2014

Yvonne Caulfield —

Environmental action started with a bang this year when dozens of enthusiastic students across all years united to campaign against deep sea oil drilling in New Zealand.

Chaos ensued as many bright, colourful, deep and meaningful posters were created, before a band of students joined the hundreds of other protesters at St. Clair Beach in February. ProGas Otago were keen to talk to us about our “naïve, uneducated and brainwashed” ideas and after expressing our interest in hearing their point of view, we have yet to hear back from them.

Our application for funds to support a rubbish initiative for the school was successful and starting next year, each group will receive a bucket, tongs and re-useable gloves to replace the unsustainable use of latex ones.

To follow on from our tradition in previous years, we decided to complete the redecorating of the canteen and paint the remaining wall with a sustainable water theme to be painted in the summer holidays.
