Rebecca Dalphin and Molly Barton and Andy Parsons —

For the past year, in Terms 1 and 4, a group of students have been going to the local marina to sail each Tuesday (except when the weather’s really bad).

Term One this year has been one of the best starts to a sailing year yet.

Large numbers of mostly Year 9 and 10 students regularly sailed on Tuesdays after school with experienced sailors passing on their skills to the new-comers.

Linus Molteno, Molly Barton, Miriam Barton, Ella Molteno competed in a week long regatta on the Otago Harbour during Tournament Week.

Miriam (Skipper) and Ella (Crew) won the Allan Garbutt Trophy for best all female crew and were also placed 3rd under handicap and 5th overall in the Gold Fleet. Molly (Skipper) and Linus (Crew) also enjoyed a podium finish being placed third in the Silver Fleet. Well done to both teams!   - Andy Parsons

While there we sail mostly Sunbursts, or Sunnies, a two person boat that we sometimes sail with three people. We also occasionally sail Toppers, a one person boat.

The weather has been amazing, with good winds and not many cancellations due to rain or too high wind. We’ve had a few close calls, involving rocks and large ships in the channel, but mostly had a great time, even with the periodic capsize.

In Term 1, there was the South Island Secondary Schools Sunburst Sailing Regatta. Two boats from Logan Park sailed; one with Molly Barton and Linus Molteno, and the other with Miriam Barton and Ella Molteno. We were sailing for an entire week, and got very cold and wet, but overall we had a good time. Both boats capsized, and it was a great learning experience for us all. Molly and Linus came 3rd in the non-spinnaker Silver Fleet, while Ella and Miriam came 5th in the non-spinnaker Gold Fleet, and won the Allan Garbutt Trophy for first female crew.

A big thank you to Mr Parsons, Ms Daly, and Fraser Braid for running sailing this year and allowing this amazing sport to continue at Logan Park.
