Rock Band

Jim Robinson —

This year Logan Park has enjoyed a wealth of student bands from all year levels.

We recently held our annual Outdoors Music Concert: a lunch time where student musicians are invited to perform their music to the school from outside our canteen. Eight Logan Park groups performed and the event opened with a duo act with George Maclaurin on piano and Josh Grills singing. Other performers included 164 (Carmen and Erica), Jimmy and the Stale Fingers (Oliver, Oliver, Jimmy, Florence and Jasper) and a rag-tag assembly of musicians including Tim Copland, Codey Bishop-Newman and Jacobi Kohu-Morris.

Some of the groups that performed for this festival had auditioned for Smoke Free Rock Quest earlier in the year with two groups including Logan Parkers reaching the regional finals at Sammy’s in June. Both 164 and Jimmy and the Stale Fingers also performed at the Waitati School’s Firework night, enjoying a more casual performance atmosphere and a fantastic firework display further into the night.

Over the past few years there has been a continual effort to encourage student driven bands and groups of all ages at Logan Park. Every Tuesday afterschool we hold our Rock School, which allows student groups to practice amongst other student musicians, creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere among the schools musicians. A lot of class room groups (groups formed in class for the purpose of a performance assessment etc) tend to stick together and end up performing for or outside the school. We look forward to the continued development of Logan Park music and the new opportunities 2015 will present to us.
