Music Department News

John Dodd —

We are so spoiled in the Music Department, because every school day of the year we are treated to the creative sounds that our wonderful students create, and we get to witness the growth in skills, and the development of the ensembles that we support.

None of this can happen without the staff that support all of the activities, both in and out of the class. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hana Fahy for her fabulous classroom teaching and work with the choir, and also to thank all of the instrumental teachers who teach the skills required so that the students become capable contributors to the musical offerings. So my thanks and great appreciation extend to Sara Brown (voice and piano), Calder Prescott (jazz band), Nick Cornish (woodwind), Beverly Dwan (violin), Andy Parsons (the other one) and Leo LaDell (guitars), Anna Peterson (cello), Bill Henderson (brass), and our fabulous new drums tutor, Paul McLennan-Kissel. Between them they give weekly instrumental tuition to about 100 students!

After the success of the Tirahanga music camp at the beginning of 2013 we were keen to have another go. As in the previous year we used the occasion to kick start our three key ensembles (choir, jazz band, orchestra), but there was also plenty of time for more informal music making, and developing friendships.

My sincere thanks go to Kristen Gillespie, Kasey Demanser and the other parent helpers, without whom this occasion just wouldn’t fly! I’d go just for the food!

Can I also take this opportunity to thank all of the students for their participation in, and commitment to all things musical; in particular my wonderful music prefects Aelyth Harrison and Loren Palmer, and others who have provided leadership, advice, expertise and mentoring skills around the department. I greatly appreciate all your efforts.
