September Sports Round Up

Frankie Vella —

Term 3 has featured a diverse range of sports and events.

Our interhouse lunchtime events continue to be popular.

Congratulations to Hockey players Kieran Black, Nic Butler and Solly Armstrong who have been selected for U15 Otago Hockey Development teams.

In Netball our Logan Park Gold team were runners up in the Yr 10 second division.

In Football our junior boys A team were runners up in the Junior boys second division. The boys lost only one game all season. Thanks to Coach Finn Kelly.

The Logan Park combined girls Rugby team placed 3rd in the Rugby 10's division. Many of the girls took up rugby for the first time this year, and their coach, Gemma Harris has done a great job of building a strong team culture. They enjoyed their tournament day on Friday 6 September.

Two Logan Park Curling teams attended the South Island Curling Champs in August. Both teams improved their curling skills coming up against some top ranked NZ curling teams and holding their own.

The Get 2 Go Challenge teams attended a Kayak training session with Otago Polytechnic Outdoor Ed programme to prepare for the Get 2 Go challenge.  Our students had a wonderful time and grew in confidence. Big thanks to the Polytechnic Outdoor Ed team.

Congratulations to Cole Brooks-Adams who is in the Otago U14 Waterpolo team. The team won all their games to Christchurch and Invercargill in August. Cole will compete in the Nationals in Tauranga in December.

The Secondary Schools Winter Tournament week was a highlight for several teams and the experiences mean we will be stronger next year.

Our Girls 1st XI Football team competed in Invercargill against 16 other teams from around New Zealand with our last game going to an exciting penalty shootout.

Our Boys Football 1st XI competed in Dunedin and our Boys Hockey 1st XI travelled to Ashburton.  All of the teams played well with some strong team and individual performances.

In Badminton, Luke Brinsdon continues to impress. He played in the Canterbury U15 tournament in August and was runner-up for boys singles. During the October school holidays he is competing in Invercargill with the Otago U15 team at the South Island Team Champs and will also play in the New Zealand U15 individual champs in Christchurch.

A number of Logan Park teams  attended the Secondary School Petanque Championships in September. We won the Top School Award with 6 teams in the top ten.  Jasper Seddon and Linus Molteno were third overall.

Two teams competed in the Get 2 Go Challenge; a day of adventure racing. There were 20 teams from around Otago/Southland competing in wet muddy conditions. Students enjoyed the combination of problem solving, kayaking, mountain biking and orienteering.

Our lunchtime interhouse sports events continue to be popular and successful. In Futsal we saw a nail-biting final between Toroa and Omimi with Toroa winning thanks to some fancy footwork from the Yeardley siblings.

The sporting event for Youth Week in the last week of term was Interhouse Multisport. Students played basketball, hockey, netball and futsal. Big thanks to Ziggi Kaitai Martin who did a fantastic job of running the chaos that is interhouse multisport.
