Writers’ Group 2015

Mary Locker —

Down a dim, dark, corridor in the English block, there is a door. Through that door, there is a world which is light, bright, and full of creativity, encouragement, and thoughtfulness. The name of that world is Writers’ Group.

Writers’ Group is a weekly refuge from all the noise and turbulence of lunchtime. It is somewhere where you can go to think, and share with others. Somewhere where there is support and people who will help you along whichever literary path you choose to pursue.

We are given numerous opportunities to extend ourselves through writing workshops, competitions and sharing our work with others. This year we were especially lucky to be visited by an online publisher. We took part in the Dunedin Readers and Writers Festival, and entered competitions such as Re-Draft, and the annual poetry competition which is run by the Dunedin Public Libraries. The Dunedin Public Libraries competition was won by Beth Lynch, one of our Writers’ Group members.

Another Logan Park High School writer, Frances Barnett has had her poetry accepted into the publication Poems in the Waiting Room, and every year we have someone from Writers’ Group accepted into Re- Draft a national publication. This year both Frances and myself will have work published in Re-Draft’s annual book of poetry and short stories. Those of us in Writers’ Group who do not choose to enter competitions usually do so because we are too busy working on very promising novels to think about anything else! Writers’ Group is a warm, welcoming place to spend your lunchtime, and I would definitely encourage those who enjoy reading and writing to come along. Thanks to Ms MacTaggart for all your support.
