April Sports Round Up

Kristan Mouat —

Our Athletics Programme at school is paying off with some impressive results in the Otago-Southland Athletics Championships in March.

Rebecca Dalphin was second in the U14 3000 metres, Zack Hibbert was second in the U14 Discus and Annelise Scharpf was third in the U14 High Jump. These students along with Leila East Giles (Yr 12) and Vivienne Dalphin (Yr 9) qualified for the South Island Champs and enjoyed the strong competition.

In Sailing our teams did well in the South Island Secondary Schools Sunburst Regatta in March. Linus Molteno, Molly Barton, Miriam Barton and Ella Molteno competed in the regatta which ran on Otago Harbour during Summer Tournament week. Miriam Barton (Skipper) and Ella Molteno (Crew) won the Allan Garbutt Trophy for Best All Female Crew and were also third handicapped and fifth overall in the Gold Fleet.   Molly (Skipper) and Linus (Crew) also enjoyed a podium finish being placed third in the Silver Fleet. Thanks to our supportive parents as well as Karen Daly and Andy Parsons for their involvement.

Handball continues to be popular and our Mixed Team will play East Otago High School on 12 April in the final.

Our Mixed Team has been unbeaten all season. Our Senior Boys Futsal team travelled to Wellington for the National Secondary Schools Futsal tournament in April. Unfortunately fog meant their flight was diverted to Auckland and they had to drive to Wellington, missing a day's competition and losing to the eventual winners of the competition. They featured on national television and coped well with the change in plans. The team will play in the Dunedin Division One Final on Thursday 13 April. (A report on the trip features elsewhere in this Park Press).

On the Sports Service front, 16 students assisted Dunedin North Intermediate with their school Triathlon in March. And 8 students helped with the Fundamental Fun Day, a primary school programme run by Sport Otago for children in Years 0-3, aiming to develop the fundamental skills needed to successfully participate in activities and games. Thanks to Francine Vella for all her support with many of the Service outreaches.

Our Interhouse Dodgeball competition was won by Omimi House in a close final with Aoraki House and organised by the Sports Prefects. We're looking forward to a busy time for Winter Sports with increases in participation rates.

Anna Walrond,  will be travelling to Bermuda next term to represent NZ in sailing in the America's Cup Endeavour Open.   Anna is also attending the O'pen Bic Winter Champs in Auckland, in July.
