Alva Feldmeier won a trip to Wellington in December to receive her Distinguished Award and $500 in the Moving Words National competition.

The competition is designed to encourage literary translation in secondary schools. The theme was One Planet, One Humanity: Postcards from New Zealand to the World.   "When we think. When we speak. When we write. When we sign. Even when we remain silent. Consciously or unconsciously, we translate all the time, every day."

New Zealand secondary school students were invited to submit an image and two versions of a caption to the image. The two captions needed to be in different languages, so that one was a translation of the other.

Alva enjoyed the ceremony and meeting new people from the European Union, The Goethe Institute, and the Swiss Embassy.

Das sind wir, eine Schar bunt gemischter Menschen, unaufdringlich, bescheiden, nicht perfekt.

Viele von uns sind abenteuerlustig und sportlich, die meisten ehrlich und freundlich.

Man sagt uns nach, dass wir relaxt sind und unseren Gästen gegenüber sehr aufgeschlossen.

Wir sind stolz auf unser Land, auch wenn es geografisch recht isoliert ist. Es gibt nicht viele von uns, aber unsere Einwohnerzahl steigt stetig an.

Die meisten von uns Kiwis haben europäische Wurzeln, die zweitgrößte ethnische Gruppe sind die Maori, dieser folgt dicht die Asiatische.

Ein Kiwi ist nicht selten eine Mischung aus Allen.

Grundsätzlich sind wir praktisch veranlagt, sparsam, erfinderisch und keine Wegwerfgesellschaft.

Eine kaputte Mikrowelle könnte ein Briefkasten werden, eine defekte Gefriertruhe ein Gemüsehochbeet.

In unserem Land gibt es einiges zu entdecken, mehr als Bungee Jumping, Fluss Rafting oder Fallschirmspringen.

Neben atemberaubend schöner und vielfältiger Landschaft gibt es UNS zu entdecken.

Wir gehen respektvoll miteinander um, lassen den Nachbarn den Nachbarn sein, tolerieren kein Mobbing. Es gibt reichlich Platz sich zu entfalten und kaum gesellschaftliche Zwänge.

Zu schön, um wahr zu sein?

Ja! Und damit wir es nicht vergessen, braucht es Euch, kommt vorbei und sagt es uns!

Many of us are adventurous and sporty, most are honest and kind.

They say of us that we are laid back and very welcoming towards our guests.

We are proud of our country, even if it is geographically quite isolated. There are not many of us, but our population is constantly increasing.

Most of us Kiwis have European roots, the second largest ethnic group are Maoris, closely followed by Asians.

Often a kiwi is a mixture of all of these.

Fundamentally we are a practical, efficient, innovative and not a throwaway society.

A broken microwave could be a mailbox, a defective freezer a raised garden bed.

In our country there is a lot to discover, more than bungee jumping, river rafting and skydiving.

Besides our breathtakingly beautiful and well varied landscape it has US to discover.

We are respectful to each other, leave our neighbors in peace and do not tolerate bullying. There is plenty of space to be yourself and hardly any social constraints.
