New Zealand Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls Nationals

On the 14th-16th of December 2014  three Logan Park students embarked upon the New Zealand Secondary Schools Nationals (lawn bowls) held at the Howick Bowling Club in Auckland.

Hamish McKinlay skipped Bradley Yates in the pairs and Jonty Horwell played in the singles event. In tough conditions on day one there were mixed results but also some very close games for Logan Park.  Hamish and Bradley just missed out on qualifying for the championship and Jonty placing second in his section.

On day two of the competition the pairs had two very close losses and bounced back to win their last convincingly.  In the singles Jonty had two must win games in order to qualify for the semi-finals.  He won the first by two points and the last by one which placed him third overall for the day.

On the final day of the competition Jonty played Auckland's Aiden Takarua.   He had a strong start and ended up winning 16-8 and looking strong going into the final. Finbar McGuigan from Aotea College had beaten Tom Taiaroa from Timaru to earn his place as Jonty's opponent. Finbar started strong and led Jonty 11-2 but Jonty turned it around to win 21-13 and take the National Singles Championship title.   Logan Park had a strong presence at the nationals and with the strong results they will be one to watch in future.
