International Department 2017

Christine Bennet —

2017 has again been a busy and rewarding year for the International Department. With about 30 students from a variety of countries from Japan to Sweden, the students added colour and vibrancy to Logan Park.

They got involved in a wide range of groups and activities from Amnesty International to Rock Quest as well as sports teams.

The Race Unity Assembly and International Food Festival gave kiwi students the opportunity to appreciate the wide range of cultures in the school as well as tasting the delicious food on offer. Everyone is really appreciative of the efforts that go into these two important events.

For our new students, the year began with orientation where they got to meet their buddies who gave them a tour of the school and then in the afternoon they were shown Dunedin and environs by Mark Dixon of Awesome Tours.

During the year the international students were given many opportunities to experience the special natural environment of our region. This began in term one with a tramp on Stewart Island. Many thanks to Doctor Thompson and Tip for again making this a memorable experience.

In term two we went to the Albatross Colony where we were lucky enough to see chicks and Albatross parents landing to feed them. The outdoor experience for term 3 was a trip to Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook and in term 4 some of the students tramped the Greenstone.

In term 4 we also ran a summer school for the senior students which involved a wide range of activities from surfing to dressing up at Toitu.

We would like to thank all our homestay families for making the year so memorable for the students by providing a home away from home and making the effort to make sure they experienced a lot of what Dunedin and New Zealand have to offer.
