Girls Hockey 2021

Megan Macdiarmid Captain 2021 —

2021 was another successful year for hockey at Logan Park. The Girls’ 1st XI played well throughout the season and came fifth in Division 2 of the Dunedin-wide competition, winning an exciting playoff with Queens in what turned out to be our final game.

Congratulations to everybody for making the best of the disrupted season – it was great to see how much the team improved over the year. Ably led by Megan, our only year 13 and our longest serving player, this is a young and developing team but they were always enthusiastic and committed (even during the 7:30am practices) and most importantly wanted to have fun. Special mention needs to be made of Mixi Flint who became a reluctant goalkeeper, however, she turned out to be a natural and her crucial saves and terrifying commitment made the difference in all the games we won. A number of the players are playing on the weekends for women's teams and Lily was selected to represent Otago in her age group. One of the best parts of this team is seeing who steps up and how people develop, a particular thanks to those players who filled in when we were short and often plate out of position.

A mention must go to all our sideline supporters, hockey doesn’t happen on its own. So thanks to all those caregivers who got up early to get players to practices, stood on the sideline on those freezing Monday nights often after 8pm, and dealt with the injuries after the matches. A special thank you to Rob and Alan and Frankie for helping out at practices or being there at the six a side games, we look forward to you all being involved again next season!

Our social team did well competing in the mixed six-a-side competition on Tuesday nights. This was a nice opportunity for players to develop their skills and get more time on the field, and the team achieved some good results, coming fourth in the league overall. This was not an easy grade and every other team often stacked their teams and with no goalies this often meant lots of running and high scoring games.

We also had two teams play in the Dunedin Co-ed Winter Sports Tournament in July, achieving some great results. Our Mixed 1st XI came first in hockey, beating Bayfield in the final; and edging Logan Park towards our overall placing of second in the tournament. Our 2nd team also did well, playing some challenging games. Well done to everyone involved in the tournament for a brilliant result and an awesome day of hockey.

Thank you to all the girls on this years’ team for making this season a great one – and thank you especially to Mr Spronken, for being a wonderful coach and getting up early every Thursday morning to run our practices. His support and dedication are greatly appreciated, and the team wouldn’t be the same without him!
