Choir 2019

Alice Houston-Page —

The Logan Park High School Choir has had a thoroughly rewarding year, and we’ve loved every minute of it.

We kick-started the year with the annual school music camp at Camp Tirohanga, where the choir, jazz band and orchestra came together for a jam-packed weekend of delicious food, hilarious memories, and epic jam sessions (with some actual rehearsals dispersed throughout too). Music camp is the absolute best way to form special connections with new choir members, and to select and rehearse our exciting repertoire for the year.

We spent the first half of the year working towards the Big Sing, a “big” inter-school choir competition that involves over twenty incredible choirs from the Otago region. We performed three pieces of completely different styles: E Papa by Herbs, Adiemus by Karl Jenkins, and Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House. We sang our hearts out, and happily received a Commended award!

Our choir members then enthusiastically performed in the combined choir at the 50th Otago Secondary Schools Music Festival at the Dunedin Town Hall. We all loved the festival, and it was an ideal way to meet new people from other Dunedin choirs and sing together in a friendly, non-competitive way. Sometimes I still hear our choir members humming I Sing Because I’m Happy through the corridors!

We also sang at the Logan Park 40 Hour Famine Fundraiser Concert, organised by the school Charities Club. This was a wonderful opportunity to perform alongside the stunning kapa haka group, orchestra, and jazz band for proud parents, and raise money for a hugely important cause.

We’re really looking forward to performing Wouldn’t It Be Nice by The Beach Boys at Senior Prizegiving in November. This will be the final chance for our amazing 2019 choir to celebrate, and show off, everything that we have to offer musically.

However, for the Year 13s, Senior Prizegiving devastatingly marks the end of an era. On behalf of everyone who must say goodbye to the Logan Park choir: thank you so much Ms Fahy! Your hard work and dedication has boosted our confidence in our singing, and given us a lifelong love of music. Choir has been a highlight of our Logan Park journey, and we’ll always treasure the memories made in the unbeatable Music Department.

I’m so grateful for everything that the Logan Park choir has offered me, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this talented group. Knock ‘em dead!
