Language and Cultural Exchange

Ella Lee —

The cultural exchange with the Korean class and the Māori class was fantastic!

It started off with the Māori class doing a Haka to then Tip translating the Haka lyrics, explaining the land that Logan Park lives on. I enjoyed the next part of the cultural exchange where Tip was teaching us (Korean Class) some moves that are traditionally used within hakas and the Māori name for the action.

After that we gathered together and watched Ms Kim making Kimbap (김밥). My stomach was starting to rumble at this point. We then split into groups where some Korean students were with some Māori students to help teach them how to make Kimbap. The Kimbap mainly consisted of rice (밥), pickled radish (단무지), carrot (당근), spinach (시금치), egg (계란) and meat (불고기). I could feel that my mouth was starting to water and I could tell I wasn’t the only one that was hungry to eat. We followed Ms Kim’s steps of putting the rice on the seaweed, going all out on fillings, then rolled it and cut it to mouth sized pieces. Everyone sat at the table then we did a Karakia before eating. It was so yummy and delicious that I was consuming the Kimbap so quickly it looked like I was just inhaling it! I then got offered homemade Kimchi from Ms Kim and put it on top of my Kimbap and Omph! My mouth was tingling. At the end, everybody seemed pretty satisfied with the food that they made. It was definitely a fun and happy experience that I won’t forget.
