Inter House events 2015

Scott Bayne —

Sports day is the first opportunity for Houses to display their sporting prowess. With over a dozen different events to choose from, students took to the track and field at the Caledonian Stadium to wrestle the title from Omimi, last year’s champions.

As always, the students displayed a wealth of speed, agility, teamwork and passion to try to be this years top House. I felt the Houses did really well this year as unlike previous years, due to the Caledonian stadium being resurfaced before the U21 Football World Cup, our students were unable to train beforehand. However, Omimi who proved to be once again too strong to beat, were crowned 2015 champions.

The second Inter-House competition was planned and run by members of our Student Sports Council. Run during lunch time and over several weeks, each House sent teams to represent their juniors and seniors. It was a very close run event and went right down to the wire with Aoraki taking the 2015 crown. It was a well-run and entertaining event and credit goes to the students for running such a great competition.

In Term 2, students took to the local area to race against each other. The cross country course saw runners race around the school and Logan Park grounds covering over 3km. There were not as many runners taking part this year as previous years but the standard and times of those who did were excellent. Once again Omimi powered to their second win of the year. A big thank you is owed to the senior students who helped keep the event nice and safe by marshalling the different areas around the course.

The second student Sports Council event to run this year was Dodgeball. Again, like the futsal it was very well planned and organised with huge student numbers turning out at lunch time to support their house. This event like the futsal ran over several weeks and again was a close run competition. However, Toroa took control and won the event, their first of 2015. Was Omimi's grip starting to slip?

Term 3 saw our popular Indoor Rowing competition, a relay event of four students taking it in turn to race 500m each and covering over 2000m. This event, utilising cutting edge technology to connect rowing machines together with each House's “boat” being projected onto a huge display in the gym has become one of the main sporting events for the school and events are often very close. This year's competition was no different with three Houses being neck and neck to win when the last race, the senior boys started. The lead changed hands a number of times and the winner of this race could potentially seal the overall sporting House trophy for 2016. Winning by only one point Omimi took the 2015 title.

This therefore secured Omimi's dominance this year and saw them crowned Sporting Champions 2015, their second year in a row as champions. Well done to all the students who took part in this year’s events and next year, can anyone wrestle the championship away from mighty Omimi?
