Badminton 2015

Paul Fielding —

Another great year for badminton with two first places in the boys’ secondary school competition.

Our first team of Punn Ruayruen, David Spencer, Moshe Vincent and Theo Molteno won the premier division by beating Kings in the semi-final 5/1 and John Mcglashan in the final 4/2.

The final went down to the very last game where Moshe Vincent had to win one set to secure the victory and avoid a draw with an unfavourable countback. With several adult supporters nervously watching on, Moshe narrowly won the first game and comfortably the second to bring home the win.

This result is quite spectacular considering our number one team only had one player left from the undefeated 2014 team. Luckily we picked up Moshe Vincent from Kings at the start of the year and David Spencer and Theo Molteno stepped up to be competitive at this higher level.

Our boys’ second team also won their section with a solid team effort throughout the year. This team comprised Aryan Zarei, Kevin Chung, Joseph Dewhirst, Hamish Mckinlay and George Sabonadiere.

Also in section four was our development squad of younger players including Calum Rogers, Finn Mckinlay, Lucas Nyhof, Victor Shaw, Lawrence Mammitzsch, Jack Gilmore and Aiden Downes. They often had to play much older teams and will be ready to step up in 2016.

In the Co-ed tournament in June the boys’ first team also came out on top against Kavanagh to claim bragging rights for another year.

All four members of the premier winning side are returning in 2016 so a possible repeat is on the cards for next season.

The junior girls team were new to Badminton and had fun learning a new sport with a somewhat more social focus. They were placed 3rd in their division. The senior girls team was more competitive placing 2nd in their division and placing first in the mixed team at the Co-ed winter tournament.
