Shakespeare's Globe Trip

From July 8th - July 27th I (Laura) was with the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company 2022 (SGCNZ YSC). We travelled all the way from Auckland to Singapore to London, then to Stratford-upon-Avon and back again. During this time, we were tourists, students and actors.

As tourists, we saw many of the famous London landmarks on our very first day; Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster, the London eye and of course the Globe itself. It was a surreal feeling to finally be in London, and to know that I would be performing on the Globe stage in just under two weeks.

Our days consisted of multiple workshops and rehearsals at the Globe Education centre. We had one off workshops that included a text masterclass, historical dance and stage combat. As well as this we had workshops that continued over the two weeks; voice, movement and singing, which all helped to improve our confidence and our acting skills.

As I was a member of the ‘Serpent’s Tooth’ group we put on a 50 minute version of King Lear, directed by Jonathon Woolf. I was cast as the King of France and Kent 2, these roles allowed me to explore the different ways to portray high and low status characters. The rehearsals put a lot of emphasis on enunciation and meaning behind words - the Globe is an outdoor theatre and requires extra volume and purpose from performers.

Overall, being part of the Young Shakespeare Company has been the most challenging yet rewarding experience of my life.
