NZ Engineering Science Competition

The 2022 NZ Engineering Science Competition took place on Saturday 6th August from 10am to 6pm.

This year LPHS had one team of keen students enter; David Zeng, Charlie Bauchop, Micah Duckles and Aubrey Alsop Mackie.

At 10am a question was released nationwide from the University of Auckland Engineering Department, and teams around the country got to work trying to find a solution. By 6pm the reports (no larger than 10 pages) were due in.

The question that the students were faced with was:

“What’s the largest payload that could be launched into orbit by slingshot?”

The questions for this competition are open ended and require the students to state assumptions they make along the way. The team applied statistical methods, numerical modelling, physics, trigonometry, along with some serious googling to write a report to discuss their answer.

Well done to the four competitors for their mammoth effort and unrelenting persistence to solve the unsolvable! The results of the competition will be released around November.
