Hope and Sons Art Awards by Andrea McSweeney

Hope and Sons Art Awards

This year the Otago Art Society hosted the Hope and Sons Art Awards.

An art competition open to any artist in the South Island with this year's brief of “light and shadow”. Roslyn McLean's entry, titled “Street Rat” is an oil portrait on cardboard with the subject's face rendered in strong contrasting light and shadow. She originally made this painting to practise the intentional use of lighting but upon the announcement of the competition she thought it would be a good opportunity to see how it measures up against the current art industry standards.

The awards night was certainly an eventful one as Roslyn won third place overall, receiving a prize of $2000 as well as finding out that her painting had sold a few days later. For Roslyn the timing couldn’t be better as she intends to go to the University of Canterbury next year to study fine arts.  Any opportunity to exhibit her work is also a welcome one indeed.
