Dr James Scott - Geology and Mars Talk  by Janine Hills

James Scott Visits

In August we were lucky to host Associate Professor James Scott from the University of Otago.

He is an academic in the Department of Geology and he has a passion for the cosmos, in particular our solar system.

He spoke to our year 9 students about what geology is and what geologists do, and then gave us a fascinating explanation of what we know about the planet Mars, the difficulties of space travel, the potential for life on Mars. He explained clearly to us a number of cosmological phenomena, like how days and years are defined, and how an Earth day is different to a Mars day.

Those who wanted were able to touch real pieces of Mars, and pieces of rock from meteors and asteroids. James is an ex-Logan Park student, (from quite a few years ago!) and so he also enjoyed catching up with the older Logan Park teaching staff.
