Kapa Haka by Kristan Mouat

Te wiki o te reo Maori

We celebrated te wiki o te reo Maori (or Maori Language Week) in September. The theme was "Kia kaha te reo Maori." Let's make the Maori language strong.

We enjoyed a special assembly with our kapa haka performing as well as students showcasing activities for the week.  The kapa haka group also performed at Polyfest at the Edgar Centre.

Ex-student Poutama Crossman-Nixon spoke in our assembly about the importance of the language for all of us and challenged everyone to learn more of the reo and to use it every day.

Activities occurring across the wiki were:  Maori art, kahoots as well as whaka whanaunga where students were able to get to know others and establish friendship/whanau connections.

Teaching students to play Ki o rahi is planned for Term Four.

Thanks to all the students who organised a very successful and enjoyable week.
